Joan Westcott

Obituary of Joan Westcott

Joan Westcott, 78, of Broadway, Oneida, passed away quietly on Friday, August 21, 2020, at her home in Oneida. Joan was born on June 6, 1942, in Hamilton, the daughter of Lawrence and Alfhild Olson Westcott. Joan grew up in Hamilton, NY, and graduated from Hamilton High School. She went on to attend Indiana University, earning undergraduate and graduate degrees. Later she earned a Master of Arts in Communications from the Annenberg School of Communications at the University of Pennsylvania. For many years Joan lived in San Francisco, taught college English courses, and perfected her skills editing college textbooks and professional articles. She enjoyed the cultural offerings of both San Francisco and Philadelphia and had a love of good music and great books. In 1993, Joan and her parents were severely injured in an automobile accident at the corner of Peterboro Road and Middle Road in Oneida. Joan suffered significant brain and body injuries, yet when she awoke, one of her first goals was to recover enough to help her mother and father. Joan was predeceased by her parents; her sister, Nancy Westcott; an aunt, Sylvia Tillotson, and her long-time companion and caregiver, Robert Mann. Many cousins are left to mourn her passing. We will miss Joan's grace, style, beauty, and dry wit. We extend sincere thanks to Joan's caregiver for many years, Jackie Barcomb. Graveside services will be held Tuesday October 20, 2020 at 3:00 PM North Norwich Cemetery with Rev. Betsye Mowery officiating. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ironside Funeral Home, Inc., 342 Main St., Oneida. You may view Joan’s obituary and send a message of condolence online at www.ironsidefuneralhome.com.
