Obituary of James Calvin Whitcomb, Jr.

James Calvin Whitcomb, Jr., 56, of Copperas Cove, TX, formerly of Oneida, passed away on Thursday, May 7, 2020. James was born on January 18, 1964, in Rome, the son of James C. and Joyce Wilkes Whitcomb, Sr. James grew up in Oneida and graduated from Oneida High School, Class of 1983. On October 4, 1990, James was united in marriage to Rebecca Post in Bamburg, Germany. James proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army for eight and a half years. During his service, he served in Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the Army Achievement Medal, three OLC, two Good Conduct Awards, the Southwest Asia Service Medal with two Bronze starts, Expert Marksmanship Badge Rifle/M16, and the Combat Infantry Badge. After his honorable discharge from the Army, James went on to work in the food service industry for twenty years. In James’s free time, he loved to watch his Dallas Cowboys play and traveling to Sea World in San Antonio. He had a service cat, Cookie, who was his best friend for eight years. Surviving besides his loving wife of nearly thirty years, Rebecca; are his children, Michael (Erin) Whitcomb, of Canastota, Corey (Katie Savoy) Whitcomb, of Chittenango, Katie Whitcomb, of Canastota; Brittany (Fernando Cisneros) Whitcomb, of Lampasas, TX, Jessica (Kaitlyn) Whitcomb, of Ft. Stewart, GA, James (Bailey) Whitcomb, III, of Hinesville, GA; his mother, Joyce Whitcomb, of Oneida; two sisters, Robyn (Mark) Barbano, and Terry (Paul) Maphia, all of Oneida; his brother-in-law, Chad Wallace, of Oneida; a father-in-law, Jerry Post, of Hemet, CA; a brother-in-law, Richard (Brigette) Post, of Corpus Christi, TX; twelve grandchildren; and many beloved nieces and nephews. James was predeceased by his father, Butch, in 2011, his nephew, David A. Wallace, Jr., in 2004, and his sister, Kathy Jo Wallace, in 2019. Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, graveside services with Military Honors will be held at a later date at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, Texas. A Celebration of James’s life will be held in Oneida, at a later date. Arrangements where entrusted to the Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home, 211 West Ave B, Copperas Cove, TX, and the Ironside Funeral Home, Inc., 342 Main St., Oneida.
