Obituary of John Lyons
John A. Lyons, DDS, 70, of Baldwinsville, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 24, 2019, at his home surrounded by his loving family following a 14-year battle with cancer.
He was born on February 20, 1949, in Syracuse, NY, the son of Dr. Alton E. and Mary Hesburgh Lyons. John grew up in Oneida, NY, and was a graduate of Oneida High School, Class of 1967. He went on to receive a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English in 1971 from the University of Notre Dame, where his uncle, Father Theodore Hesburgh was President. Upon graduation, John was commissioned an ensign in the United States Navy where he proudly served his country during the Vietnam War as an anti-submarine officer aboard the USS Uhlmann (DD-687) and the USS Barbey (DE-1088). Although serving in the military during this time was unpopular, John was proud of his service to his country and was honorably discharged in 1973. John followed in his father’s footsteps to become a Doctor of Dental Surgery, Class of 1979, from SUNY Buffalo School of Dentistry. He completed a General Practice Residency in 1980 at Millard Filmore Hospital in Buffalo, NY.
John was united in marriage to Mary Martha “Marty” Boice, of Lyons, NY, on April 3, 1982, in St. Michael’s Church Newark, NY, officiated by John’s uncle, Father Theodore “Ted” Hesburgh.
John practiced general dentistry in South Buffalo, NY, for a year before returning to Central New York. For a brief time, he practiced dentistry in the Eastwood area of Syracuse. In 1982, John established a practice of general dentistry in Cato, NY. With the assistance of his wife, Marty, John served his patients for thirty-three years at the Pine Hill Medical Building, retiring in 2016.
John was active in many area service and church organizations. He served as President of the Baldwinsville Optimist Club, Treasurer of the Baldwinsville Football Booster Club and Board Member of the United Way of Cayuga County. John was a communicant of Saint Mary of the Assumption Church, Baldwinsville, NY, serving as an usher and advisor on the Finance Committee.
John’s passion for dentistry was contagious. John joined the medical staff at St. Joseph’s Hospital where he served as a faculty advisor, mentoring countless dental residents for 37 years.
An avid golfer, John believed that the game of golf taught a lot about life. Foxfire Golf Club, Ironwood Golf Club, Millstone Golf Club and the former Cato Golf Club were courses that he especially enjoyed with family and friends. John’s golf trips to Tampa to visit Jimmy, his brother, were a highlight each year.
Surviving besides his loving wife of thirty-seven years, Marty; are three children, William Patrick “Pat”(Gloria) Lyons, of Angola, Africa, John Peter “Jake” Lyons, of Baldwinsville, and Meredyth Anne “Mimi” Lyons (Scott Martinelli), of Gibsonia, PA; three grandchildren, Ian and Olivia Lyons, and Mya Martinelli; a brother, James M.
