Obituary of Wally Johnson
Walter V. “Wally” Johnson, 78, of 4964 Jenkins Rd., Vernon, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, June 18, 2019, at his home with his family at his side.
He was born on December 4, 1940, in Rome, the son of Samuel and Helen VandenBout Johnson. He was a graduate of Salisbury School in CT, Class of 1958. Wally received his bachelor’s degree in Business Accounting from Utica College of Syracuse University.
Wally proudly served with the US Army in 1964 and was Honorably Discharged to the Army National Guard.
On November 24, 1989, Wally was united in marriage to Patricia T. Iles in Oneida.
He started his career at Oneida National Bank in Utica then moved to Oneida Valley National Bank in 1980. He was appointed Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Oneida Valley National Bank, a position he held through the merger with Alliance Bank and retired in 2001.
He has been resident of Vernon since 1987, moving from Rome. He was a longtime member and treasurer of the Fish Creek Club, a member of the Lake Delta Yacht Club, the American Legion, the Vernon National Shooting Preserve, the Ilion Fish and Game Club, and the Beaver River Shooting Club. He had been the treasurer of the former Sylvan Springs Water Co.
Wally was an avid trap and sporting clays shooter and was a very creative woodworker. After retirement, he and his wife enjoyed fishing during winters spent in Florida.
Surviving besides his loving wife, Patty; are three daughters, Courtney (Anthony) Woods, of Potsdam, Caryn (Thaddeus) France, of Brimfield, MA, and Erin (Todd) Cormier, of Westfield, MA; a sister, Ann Croasdale, of Hilton Head, SC; seven grandsons, Jacob, Samuel and Zachery Woods, Tucker, Cole and Hayden France and Landon Cormier; a brother-in-law, Philip Thomas, of Oneida; and several nieces and nephews. Wally was predeceased by his parents, his brother-in-law, Barry Croasdale; and the mother of his children, Maureen Riley.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, June 22, 2019, at 3:00 PM at the Ironside Funeral Home, Inc., where the Rev. Thomas Sheffield will officiate. Family and friends are invited and may call on Saturday from 1:00 to 3:00 PM at the funeral home, 342 Main St., Oneida.
