Obituary of Shelley E Major

Sherrill—Shelley E. Major, 68, of 126 Cherry Lane, passed away on Saturday, December 22, 2018, at her home surrounded by her loving family under the care of Hospice.


She was born on June 19, 1950, in Oneida, the daughter of Harmon and Eunice Herbst Matteson.  Shelley was a graduate of Oneida High School, Class of 1968.  She received her associate degree in Liberal Arts from Mohawk Valley Community College and was inducted into Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.  She received her bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies from SUNY Empire State College.  She completed her graduate work at SUNY Albany and Cornell University.


Shelley proudly served her country as a member of the United States Army. 


On October 16, 1976, Shelley was united in marriage to her former classmate Joseph J. Augustine.  Mr. Augustine passed away on October 7, 2012.  She then married her former classmate Dale D. Major on September 6, 2014, in McConnellsville Community Church.


Shelley was a caseworker for Cayuga County Health and Human Services, retiring in 2012.  She was previously employed as a Service Employment and Training Counselor for the Cayuga County Employment and Training Department.  She was also previously employed as a Director and Senior Director with Unity Employment Services in Auburn.


She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Oneida.  Shelley was a past member of the Zonta Club of Auburn where she served as the recording secretary and treasurer, and a board member and the Auburn Human Rights Commission where she was the Vice Chair.  She was a former board member of Knee Hi to Knowledge Preschool Board.  She was a former member of the St. Patrick’s School Parent and Teacher Group and a Past President of the Child Care Council of the Finger Lakes.  She was a Past Regent and Past Vice Regent of the Owasco Chapter of the DAR.  She was a former member of the General Society of the Mayflower Descendants of the Buffalo and Albany Colonies, the AIDS Community Resource Task Force, and the Cayuga County Domestic Violence Task Force.  She was also a member of SUNY Canton Payson-Martin Society.  She was a past Den Mother for the Cub Scouts and a Troop 44 Committee Member.


Surviving besides her loving husband, Dale; are two sons, Michael J. Augustine, of Auburn, and Matthew J. (Danielle) Augustine, of Jordan; three grandchildren, Zackery Augustine, Liam Augustine, and Lily Vernon; a sister, Gloria (Rev. Wayne) Grow, of Oneida; a brother-in-law, Thomas Augustine, of Auburn; and three nieces and nephews, Andrea (Rev. Raymond) Gilman, Geoffrey Grow, and Jonathan (Erin) Grow.


Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 29, 2018, at 11:00 AM at the First United Methodist Church where the Rev. Abigail Browka and Rev. Denise Bowen will co-officiate.  Interment will take place in Oneida Castle Cemetery in the spring.  Family and friends are invited and may call on Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the Ironside Funeral Home, Inc., 342 Main St., Oneida.  Memorial contributions may be made in Shelley’s memory to the First United Methodist Church, 116 W.
