Obituary of Loyal A. Canning
Wampsville—Loyal A. Canning, 82, of 101 Markell Dr., passed away on Sunday, November 11, 2018, at Oneida Healthcare Extended Care Facility where he had been a patient since November 6th.
He was born on January 20, 1936, in Plattsburgh, the son of Oliver and Myrtle Cummings Canning. He was a graduate of Our Lady of Victory Academy in Plattsburgh, Class of 1954. Loyal went on to receive his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from Plattsburgh State Teacher’s College, Class of 1958.
On September 13, 1980, Loyal was united in marriage to Martha “Marty” Ames in Wampsville.
Loyal was a Math teacher at Otto Shortell Middle School for thirty-three years, retiring in 1995. He had previously taught in Beekmantown and Harrisville.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Oneida, the Oneida Area Civic Chorale, the Mohawk Valley Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, the Oneida Retired Teachers Association, the Oneida-Sherrill Lions Club, and a past member and past President of the Seneca St. Elementary PTA.
Surviving besides his loving wife of thirty-eight years, Marty; are two daughters, Elizabeth (John) Butler, of Mt. Carmel, TN, and Barbara (David) Blair, of Eaton; five sons, William (Mary) Canning, of Fulton, Barry (Tara) Canning, of Palermo, Bradley (Michelle) Canning, of Rensselaer, Robert (Carrie) Canning, of Burbank CA, and Brandon Canning, of Sharon Springs; a brother, Larry (Joy) Canning, of Hamilton; five sisters, MaryAnn (David) Mackin, of Ilion, Frances (Bob) Ladd, of Remsen, Nancy (Steve) Hoffman, of Ilion, Diane (Mark) Finocchiaro, of Yorkville, and Katherine (Mickey) McCann, of Ilion; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Loyal was predeceased by a grandson, Caleb Blair on November 3, 2009.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 16, 2018, at 2:00 PM at the First Presbyterian Church, 304 Broad St., Oneida, where Pastor Kevin Bailey will officiate. Interment will take place in Glenwood Cemetery. Family and friends are invited and may call on Thursday from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Ironside Funeral Home, Inc., 342 Main St., Oneida.
