Obituary of Deidrich Towne
Deidrich E. Towne, 91, of 29 E. Second St., passed away on Wednesday, June 6, 2018, at his home surrounded by his loving family under the care of Hospice and Palliative Care.
He was born on May 28, 1927, in Walton, NY, the son of Deidrich E. and Cornelia Vanden Bogard Towne. He was a graduate of Potsdam High School, Class of 1944. Deidrich went on to attend Clarkson University, Cornell University, and Middlebury College.
Deidrich proudly served his country as a member of the United States Coast Guard in 1944 and then with the United States Navy from 1945 to 1946.
On November 10, 1979, Deidrich was united in marriage to Shirley I. Bolton in Oriskany. On November 9, 2013, they renewed their vows with Rev. William A. Mesmer officiating in St. Helena’s Church in Sherrill.
Deidrich was employed as a human resource manager for Niagara Mohawk for thirty-four years, retiring in 1987.
He was a member of St. Helena’s Church.
Deidrich was very instrumental in helping with the building of St. Mary’s school in Potsdam. He served as the President of the Local IBEW in Potsdam for many years. He was an excellent woodcarver and builder. He enjoyed painting, gardening, hunting, antique toy collecting, and reading, especially poetry. He was a great story teller and loved learning about history especially the civil war. He enjoyed singing and even performed in several plays at the Syracuse Musical Theatre. Deidrich greatest joy was spending time with family and friends. Everyone was welcome to his home and you may enter as strangers, but you would leave as a friend.
Surviving besides his loving wife of thirty-eight years, Shirley; are six children, Deidrich E. (Cathrine) Towne, of Syracuse, Marguerite C. Towne (John Kott), of Liverpool, Jeremy P. (Janie) Towne, of Whiting, ME, Carol A. (Steve) Urquhart, of Saranac Lake, Daniel J. (Debbie) Clemmons, of Frankfort, Deborah M. (Jeremy) Purple, of Rome; ten grandchildren, Josephine, Dylan, Erin, Quinn, Ian, Joshua, Sarah, Justin, Cole, and Kenneth, Jr.; four great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Marlene Towne, of Middleburgh; and several nieces and nephews. Deidrich was predeceased by his parents, Deidrich and Cornelia; a brother, Stanley Towne; a granddaughter, Caitlin; and his first wife, Ann Curry Towne.
Funeral services with Military Honors will be held on Monday, June 11, 2018, beginning with a Prayer Service at 10:15 AM at the Ironside Funeral Home, Inc., followed by a Mass of the Christian Burial at St. Helena’s Church at 11:00 AM where the Rev. William A. Mesmer will officiate. Family and friends are invited and may call on Sunday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the funeral home, 342 Main St., Oneida.
