Obituary of Adam A. Skachenko

died Wednesday evening July 2, 2009 at Stonehedge Nursing Home Rome where he had been a resident since May 8, 2009. Adam was born on August 7, 1917 in Kildeer, ND the son of Peter and Helen Kytor Skachenko. He attended school in Moravia and moved to Vernon in 1952. He married Oretta Thompson on June 25, 1948 in Utica. Mrs. Skachenko died on October 30, 1999 at home after being cared for by her loving devoted husband. Mr. Skachenko proudly served his country during World War II with the US Army Training Service Unit 9307th Detachment. Adam was employed as a scale operator with Oneida Ltd. Silversmiths for 30 years retiring in 1979. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Oneida, the Vernon Masonic Lodge, Oneida Ltd. Retirement Club, the Community Associated Club, the American Bowling Congress and was a former member of the Sherrill American Legion Post #230. Surviving are one daughter; Helen Wilson of Rome, step daughter Emily J. Cleary of Oklahoma; one brother and sister-in-law; John and JoAnne Skachenko of Detroit, MI; three sisters; Betty Mohr of Detroit, Nancy Janko of Lakeland, FL, Jenny Geiger of Atlantic City, NJ, three grandchildren; Alexandria and Charles Pelano Jr. of Rome, Sgt. John and Michele Smith of Rome, currently stationed at Fort Drum with the US Army, Staff Sgt Adam and Lisa Smith of Jackonsville, NC currently deployed in Afghanistan with the USMC; six great grandchildren Kyle Pelano, Katrina Pelano, Caleb Smith, Natasha Smith, Payne John Smith and Owen Smith and several nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by a brother, Aaron Skachenko and a sister, Marie Devious. Funeral Services will be held 8:00 PM Monday July 6, 2009 from the Ironside Funeral home, Inc. Interment will be made in Crown Hill Memorial Park Town of New Hartford. Friends are invited and may call 6-8 PM Monday prior to the service at the funeral home 342 Main Street Oneida. Memorial Contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.
