Obituary of John Skibitski

John S. Skibitski, 87, of 410 River Rd., passed away on Monday, October 30, 2017, at Bethany Gardens where he had been a resident for the past few months.

He was born on August 27, 1930, in Rome, the son of John B. and Nellie Ostrowski Skibitski. John attended Holland Patent schools.

John proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army from 1947 to 1950.

John worked at Griffiss Air Force Base Printing Plant as a supervisor. When the base abolished the printing plant, he changed professions to a fireman for Griffiss Air Force Base, retiring in 1985 after twenty-five years. He received several accommodations for bravery, including one in particular for entering into a flaming fighter jet to rescue the General that was flying the plane.

He was a lifelong resident of Rome and a member of Transfiguration Church. He was a longtime member of Mohawk Glen Golf Club where he served as secretary of the Mohawk Glen Golf League for over twenty years. In his early eighties, John played golf (at least nine holes) 297 consecutive days in the city of Rome. When he was able, he attended every sporting event that his nieces and nephews participated in throughout the years. John was also a very good bowler and he once led the one-man classic league in 1963-1964 with a 202 average.

John was an avid hunter and could often be found as his hunting camp in the Town of Ohio. He enjoyed gardening, raising all his plants from seed. He also loved to fish especially on Oneida Lake and Lake Ontario.

Surviving are his three brothers, Leonard (Margaret) Skibitski, of Rome, Richard Skibitski, of Rome; and Dennis (Donna) Skibitski, of Atlanta, GA; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. John was predeceased by two sisters, Esther (Ray) Bazan and Delores (Leo) Jaroz; and a brother, Robert Skibitski.

John's family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the staff at Bethany Gardens, Dr. Chester Patrick, and Dr. Joel Amidon, for the kindness and compassion given to John.
