Obituary of Mary Lyons

Mary Alice Lyons, 94, of Oneida, passed away on Saturday evening, August 12, 2017, at the Oneida Healthcare Extended Care Facility where she had been a resident since May 9, 2013.

She was born on September 16, 1922, in Utica, the daughter of Carl A. and Grace L. Bartell Boehlert. She was a graduate of Oneida High School, Class of 1939. She received her Bachelor's Degree from Oneonta Teachers College, Class of 1943. She went on to attend Syracuse University and Colgate University for graduate work in mathematics.

On September 15, 1956, Mary Alice was united in marriage to Dr. Harold E. Sharon. Dr. Sharon tragically passed away on December 6, 1956. On June 27, 1961, Mary Alice was united in marriage to Dr. Alton E. Lyons. Dr. Lyons passed away on February 6, 1975.

Mary Alice taught Math in Windsor, NY from 1943 to 1945. She then went on to teach Junior High Math in Ithaca from 1945-1956 and in Oneida from 1956-1961.

She was a member of St. Patrick's Church and their Altar and Rosary Society. She was a former member of the Catholic Daughters, Court of Our Lady#1250 and the Oneida Healthcare Auxiliary.

Mary Alice spent many summers on 23rd Ave in Sylvan Beach enjoying family and all that Oneida Lake had to offer, especially the sunsets. She was renowned for her summer "Sunday Picnics", her fantastic holiday dinners, and family parties with elegant décor, special treats and desserts. She was a consummate hostess. To her, family was everything and her gracious hospitality will never be forgotten.

Surviving are four children, Patricia (Terry) Gottlieb, of Holland, MI, Dr. John (Marty) Lyons, of Baldwinsville, Anne (Edward) Thoma, of Sherrill and James Lyons, of Tampa, FL; eight grandchildren, Maureen Gottlieb, Kathleen (Justin) Lunsford, Bridget Gottlieb, Patrick (Gloria) Lyons, Jake Lyons, Meredyth (Scott) Martinelli, Susan (Dr. William) Haun, and Mark Thoma (Dr. Chris Carter); two great-grandsons, Ian Lyons and Liam Haun; two sisters, Sister M. Carleen Boehlert, IHM, of Scranton, PA, and Barbara Potter, of Oneida Castle; three brothers, C. Richard Boehlert, of Bluffton, SC, James (Rose Marie) Boehlert, of Vestal and Sylvan Beach, and William (Carolyn) Boehlert, of Rio Medina, TX; a sister-in-law, Mary Boehlert, of Murrieta, CA; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Mary Alice was predeceased by a sister, Frances B. Ironside, on May 30, 2001; two brothers, John B. Boehlert, on June 3, 2006 and Edward J. "Ted" Boehlert on April 9, 2009, a sister-in-law, Marge Boehlert on October 22, 2004, and two brothers-in-law, James D. Ironside on December 14, 1982 and Robert W. Potter, on June 15, 2011.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 18, 2017, with a Prayer Service at 9:15 AM at the Ironside Funeral Home, followed by a 10:00 AM Funeral Mass at St. Patrick's Church, 347 Main St., Oneida, where the Rev. Richard J. Kapral will officiate. Interment will take place in St. Patrick's Cemetery. Family and friends are invited and may call on Thursday from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the funeral home, 342 Main St., Oneida. Memorial contributions may be made in Mary Alice's memory to St. Patrick's School, 354 Elizabeth St., Oneida, New York, 13421.
