Obituary of Debra J O'Neil

Debra Jean (Vredenburgh) O’Neil, 56, of Main St., Oneida, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 16, 2021, at her home surrounded by her family after a battle with colon cancer. Deb was born on April 23, 1965, in Johnson City, NY, the daughter of Diane (Hanson) and Donald Vredenburgh. She was a graduate from Chenango Forks High School, Class of 1983, and Clarkson University with a bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Class of 1987. On October 1, 1988, Debra married the love of her life, Paul A. O’Neil, at the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown. Deb was employed at ICON (Oneida Research Services, Prevalere) since October 1988. Deb enjoyed books (mysteries), gardening (mostly weeding), movies and TV (cooking shows, but she still couldn’t cook), music (especially 70s AM soft rock), and mostly genealogy where she got to connect with many distant relatives. She was lucky to make some great friends through work; Dan, Mike, Erica, Laura, Lisa, and Sharon; among many others over the years. She received great care during her illness with a special thanks to Debra W., Bryan, Helena, and Christine. Deb is survived by her loving husband, Paul, of Oneida; her daughters, Kelcie O’Neil (Alex Jacobs), of Jersey City, NJ, and Lauren O’Neil, of Oneida; her mother, Diane Vredenburgh, of Chenango Forks; her dad, Don Vredenburgh, of Chenango Forks; her brothers, Dan Vredenburgh (Katie Palm), of Delhi, Jacob (Amanda) Vredenburgh, of West Sand Lake, and Zach (Kara) Vredenburgh, of Manlius; brothers-in-law, Charles (Lisa) O’Neil, of Mineville, Timothy (Elaine) O’Neil, of Pottersville, and Richard (Nancy) O’Neil, of Ballston Lake; her nieces and nephews, Jaime (Adam) Nichols and their children, Leo and Guy, all of Milton, VT, Chris (Micaela) O’Neil, of Lyon Mountain, Logan O’Neil, of Tuscaloosa, AL, Madison, Olivia, Molly, Thomas, and Elsie Vredenburgh; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Deb was predeceased by her step-mother, Pamela (Rappleya) Vredenburgh; her in-laws, Mercedes (Perez) and Charles O’Neil; her grandparents, Ellamae (Myers) and Lester Hanson, Grace (Marks) and Marion “Andy” Vredenburgh; her uncle, Richard “Dick” Hanson; cousins, Joe Vredenburgh and Elizabeth Thompson. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 20, 2021, at 12:00 PM (Noon) at the Ironside Funeral Home, Inc., where the Rev. Thomas Lorenz will officiate. Family and friends are invited and may call on Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the funeral home, 342 Main St., Oneida, and Saturday prior to the service from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Family respectively asks that you wear a mask regardless of vaccination status within the funeral home.
