Julienne Monroe

Obituary of Julienne B. Monroe

Julienne Monroe, 81, of Oneida, N.Y., died Wednesday, April 14, 2021. Born on Nov. 29, 1939, in Albany, N.Y., she was the daughter of Helen and Raoul Baron. She graduated from Albany High School and earned her bachelor’s in English and social studies and her master’s in education from Albany Teachers’ College in 1961 and 1962, respectively. She taught in Guilderland schools. In 1977, Julienne Monroe remade her life after her divorce. She began a new career, earning a master’s degree in library science from Rosary College, and then moving from Chicago to Oneida. With little support Julienne raised two children, Victoria and Michael, while having two careers. She was a successful a librarian and library administrator in Rome City Schools. She was a landlady, operating an apartment building in Oneida. When she could, she drove to Albany to help take care of her father. When Julienne retired in 2003, she remained active, traveling to Alaska, reading the screenplay of a movie in French, and becoming a ranked bridge player. She binged on shows and movies. She read voraciously and omnivorously. She made many trips to Virginia to care for her brother Charles, and the two of them traveled together. She attended Syracuse Friends Meeting, and though inactive for some years, still considered herself a Quaker. She took many adult education classes through the Mohawk Valley Institute for Learning in Retirement. In MVILR’s course on glaciers she met the love of her life, William Taber. Julienne and William bought a travel trailer and journeyed throughout the United States. They particularly enjoyed their time in Texas and the Southwest. When she was not traveling, Julienne prowled thrift stores. She loved to go to the farmers’ market in Syracuse. She followed politics and current events closely. She studied Spanish to communicate with her daughter-in-law Nora in her native language. She generously supported many charities, particularly the Food Bank of Central New York. She was predeceased by her daughter Victoria in 2009. She is survived by her partner William; her son, Michael; her daughter-in-law, Nora Ortiz Albear; her brother, Frederick; and many nieces and nephews.
