Lois V. Irons, 98, of Wampsville, passed away Tuesday, May 12, 2020, in the Abraham House, Utica where she had been a patient since April 28, 2020. Lois was born on December 4, 1921, in Utica, the daughter of William Michael And Pearl Ellen Jones Hayes. She graduated from New Hartford High School, class of 1940 and the Utica School of Music where she studied voice. She loved playing the organ and played well into her 90s. Before her marriage, she was an assistant to Dr. Gordon Holden in Utica. On January 1, 1946, Lois was united in marriage to Russell J. Irons at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Utica. It was a loving union that lasted until his death on November 27, 1999. In 1965, she and her family moved to Afton, NY where Lois worked at Sidney Hospital. She also was employed at Afton Central School and was a home health aid until her retirement in 1974. She was a member of St. Ann’s Episcopal Church in Afton and attended St. John’s Episcopal Church in Oneida. She was a former member of the Eastern Star #3529 in Afton and of the Rebecca Lodge in Brookfield. In June of 2000, Lois moved to the Oneida area to be closer to her family. She loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was a lover of all animals especially her dog, Zoie. She was an avid New York Yankees fan. Surviving are her daughter, Dawn (Steve) Collins, with whom she resided; her sons, William (Wendy) Irons, of FL, and Clifford (Terry) Irons, of TX; 15 grandchildren; twenty-five great-grandchildren; three great great-grandchildren; two sisters, Kay Hayes (whom she loved with all her heart), and Helen, both of Clinton; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Lois was predeceased by her husband, Russell; her daughter, Marilyn; her sons, Wayne and Russell; her granddaughter, Brandy; four sisters; and three brothers. Lois’s family wishes to extend their gratitude to Hospice and Palliative Care especially Michelle, Melissa, Natalie, Beverly, and Georgia, and the staff of the Abraham House, for their wonderful care, love, and kindness to Lois during her final weeks. We will be enterally grateful. In keeping with Lois’s wishes, there will be no calling hours. Graveside services will be her held on Friday, May 22, 2020, at Glenwood Cemetery in Afton, NY, where her ashes will be interred next to her husband.
