John J. “Jack” Whipple, Sr, 85, of 524 Grand Street, Oneida, died peacefully early Wednesday morning, November 7, 2018, at his home surrounded by his loving family and under the care of Hospice.
Jack was born on April 19, 1933, in Oneida, the son of Ernest and Lula Mae Saamer Whipple. A lifelong resident of Oneida, he was a graduate of Oneida High School, class of 1951.
In 1960, Jack was united in marriage to Annie Curtis in St. Joseph’s Church, Oneida.
Jack proudly served his country with the US Air Force from 1953 to 1957 when he was honorably discharged.
For many years, Jack and his brother, Dick, owned and operated Whips Service Station on the corner Broad St and Lenox Avenue in Oneida. They retired in 1988 and then Jack was employed as courier at the Oneida Valley National Bank.
Jack was a Catholic and a longtime member of the Durhamville Vet’s Club.
In his younger years, Jack was an Eagle Scout and an altar boy at St. Joseph’s Church for Father Lauer. He was an avid New York Yankees and New York Giants fan.
Surviving besides his loving wife, Annie; are two sons, John J. Whipple Jr., of Oneida, and Gary A. (Gail) Whipple, of Canastota; two grandchildren, Andrew and Nicholas Whipple; two sisters, Ann Cook, of Oneida, and Susan Steiner, of Fayetteville; one brother, Chuck (Mary) Whipple, of Canastota; a sister -in-law, Rose Whipple, of Oneida; and several nieces and nephews.. He was pre-deceased by a brother, Richard Whipple; and two brothers-in-law, Edward Cook and William Steiner.
Private services will be held at the convenience of the family with Rev. Michael J. Carmola officiating. Interment will take place in St. Patrick’s Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made in Jack’s memory to the Durhamville Vet’s Club 5350 Canal Street Durhamville, NY 13054.
