Scott Flint Barker, 59, of Snohomish, Washington, passed away unexpectedly on Friday evening, July 23, 2021, at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle Washington, after being stricken during a health test. He was born on June 2, 1962, in Newport, Rhode Island, the son of Martin and Cynthia Flint Barker. Scott was a graduate of Oneida High School, Class of 1980. He received his bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from Syracuse University, Class of 1984, and his master’s degree in Information Resources Management from Syracuse University, Class of 1987. Scott was currently employed as the Associate Teaching Professor and Director of IT at the University of Washington in Seattle. Prior to moving to Seattle in January of 1999, he was the Director of Computing for the school of Information and Library Science at UNC, Chapel Hill, and the Assistant Director for Research and Evaluation for Networking Systems at UNC. Scott’s family was the most important thing in his life, his support and generosity to them will never be forgotten. Scott loved traveling including trips to Europe, China, Hawaii, and Alaska. He enjoyed all the family trips and vacations in Hilton Head, Isle of Palms, Cape Cod. He always made time for his family especially at Christmas. A trip home to be with them was never out of the question. He always loved acting as a tour guide in his beautiful state of Washington for visiting family and friends. Scott was a huge Syracuse University fan. He considered it the best day of his life when he was able to see in person the Syracuse University Men’s Basketball team win the National Championship in 2003 in New Orleans. Surviving are his mother, Cynthia (Fred) Whipple, of Oneida, NY, his father, Martin Barker, of Fort Fairfield, ME; his two sisters, Jill (James) Beare, of Manassas, VA, and Judith (David) DeLorenzo, of Fayetteville, NY; his brother, Mark (Kelly) Whipple, of Crestview, FL; his aunts and uncles, Lori (Dalton) Walraven Scovil, of Blaine, ME, Carole Arno, of Doswell, VA, Skip (Sue) Flint, of Oneida, and Claudia Rubino, of Rochester; a special niece Caitlin Beare who had lived with her uncle in Washington, his beloved nieces and nephews, Emily Beare, of Cincinnati, OH, Michael Beare, of Fairfax, VA, Lauren DeLorenzo, of Somerville, MA, Brian DeLorenzo, and Kristen DeLorenzo, both of Fayetteville, NY, Megan (Deven) Kirk, of Belleville, IL, Matthew Whipple, of Pensacola, FL; dear friends, Michael and Carol Eisenberg, Michael Greenstein and Heather Tully, and Joseph Janes and Terry Price, all of the Seattle area; his beloved dog, Willy Barker; and several cousins. The University of Washington faculty and staff, along with the students in the iSchool, are deeply saddened having to mourn the sudden loss of their longtime Informatics chair and student advocate. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, August 7, 2021, from St. Patrick’s Church, 347 Main Street, Oneida, with Rev. Nathan Brooks officiating. Interment will be made in St. Patrick’s Cemetery. Family and friends are invited and may call 4-7 PM Friday, August 6, 2021, at the Ironside Funeral Home, Inc., 342 Main Street, Oneida.
