Robert V. Wright, Sr., 84, of 158 Cottage Place, passed away on Tuesday, November 21, 2017, at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center after being a patient for four days.
He was born on October 20, 1933, in Oneida, the son of Francis M. and Alice M. Metcher Wright. Bob was a graduate of VVS High School, Class of 1953 and went on to attend Powelson Business Institute.
On February 25, 1955, Bob was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Bertha Hitchings in Oxford, NY.
Bob was employed as a Flight Line Foreman and an air plane refueler for Griffiss Air Force Base.
Bob was an avid bowler and golfer, and had every golfer’s dream of a hole-in-one at Peter’s Patch (Pleasant Knolls). He was a member of CNY Bluegrass Association. He enjoyed watching World War II movies especially his favorite movie, “A Bridge Too Far”. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan, Cleveland Browns fan, and a closet New York Yankee Fan. In the late 1950’s, he was a stock car driver at the Utica-Rome Speedway. He was a very regular attendee of the Sherrill Summer Concert Series in the Park.
Surviving besides his loving wife of sixty-two years, Bertha; are six children, Michael Wright, Paula Wright, Susan Wright, David (Mona) Wright, all of Sherrill, Kevin (Michelle) Wright, of Albuquerque, NM, and James (Melissa) Wright, of Chittenango; ten grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Bob was predeceased by a son, Robert V. Wright, Jr., on November 23, 2013, and a brother, Richard Wright, on November 11, 2016.
A Graveside service will be held at Oneida Castle Cemetery at a date to be announced. There are no calling hours. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ironside Funeral Home, Inc., 342 Main St., Oneida. Memorial contributions may be made in Bob’s memory to the Sherrill-Kenwood Volunteer Fire Dept.
